Toot toot! The ABCs of Eating Tender Indian COCOnuts on the Street

Today has been a really productive and fun day that started out with a colleague of mine who lives nearby collecting me instead of my normal crazy driver Babu.  And to be honest, I don’t view Babu as such a crazy driver anymore now that I have another local to compare his driving against.  I think this aggressive “kill or be killed” driving style is taught at school and is actually just the way they drive here!!  MAN, I can’t wait to get my driver’s license, a fun and sporty car, drive on the left (wrong) side of the road and get crazy myself!!

OK, the tender gooey inside of a coconut looks a bit suspect but I promise you it is DELICIOUS!

Anyhooo, I went through the Indian version of a Drive-Thru or McAuto this morning for breakfast.  It was SO AWESOME (said in a very valley girl voice).  We pulled over on the side of the road and guy with a cart full of fresh coconuts grabbed two, hacked the tops off of them with a mini machete and stuck a straw in each before handing them over to us.  Voila!!  Fresh coconut juice for breakfast.  It was soooo yummy.  They don’t look brown and rough when they are actually fresh, funny that!!!!  And then, when we finished the drink, the guy grabbed his machete again, took the coconuts, then hacked them in half to reveal this really juicy, soft fruit inside that was super tasty — although it had the look and feel of runny eggs or poorly set jello, haha.  Anyway, all in all it was a real treat and certainly the first of many breakfast coconuts for me.  And the best part???  They whole experience cost only 15 Rupees, which is 30’ish cents!!!

At the Indian Drive-Thru for a breakfast coconut!
Work was once again fabulous.  We have a lot of fun foundation laying to do like update the company name, re-brand, start up internal and external communication, etc etc so at the moment I am trying to finalize a short-term plan for the next 3 months with the help of my first team member on board who has actually been monumentally pivotal in helping me pick where my daughter and I are actually going to live for the next few years…so tomorrow I am meeting a rental agent he hooked me up with to go visit a 3,000 square foot (AMAZING) penthouse with an additional 600 square foot garden attached to it.  Fingers crossed I love it cuz the location is perfect — close to fantastic restaurants and shops and also really close to one of the bus stops from my daughter’s school.

Dinner is on the way so I will sign off for today.  I ordered curry and basmati rice plus rolls stuffed with paneer (Indian cottage cheese).  Fingers crossed the curry doesn’t kick my ass tonight, haha.

Kisses and hugs from Bangalore xo

At 21 I left uni, jumped into my Jeep Wrangler, and drove from my native California to live an adventure in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I've explored 37 countries on 4 continents, residing in 8 of them (currently Indonesia's Riau Islands is my home). I even have a private pilot's license and was shot at once by bandits!

Its nice to read something about India that’s not all about temples and the such. I mean I love that Sh*T, but it’s good to hear about the other “civilized” part to.

did you know coconut water is very good for preventing a hangover drink coconut water before going out. it is full of electrolytes!…you may want to remember this tidbit.

@Tess – you need to come over and we will go Jimmy Choo Wellies shopping together!!
@Christopher – I don’t think I will go temple hunting for a while!! Hey, you headed back to Spain soon?
@Sis – duly noted. Although it may be the cost of drinking too much that gives me the hangover, not the booze. Sooo expensive here to drink. At dinner last night I spent $3 on a kick-ass salad and $15.50 on 2 glasses of wine. Holy crap!! haha

  8. You are having all the good things in life…Tender coconut, curry and basmati rice plus rolls stuffed with paneer. You surely got me hungry…LOL..

The tender coconut pic looks so amazing. That is the best drink one can have in summer. Unfortunately the coconut trees are dwindling in number now. You should travel along coastal India especially Goa, Mangalore, Kerala to see a coconut tree standing tall and high. 🙂

I have seen them in Goa and in 10 days I’m off to kerala so will try to take special notice 🙂 -A

  9. You have been to Goa and I do not know if there is a blog post on that (Please please do not reveal it yet).. You should have a good time in Kerala especially since it is monsoon season now.. You left out the city I mentioned in between Goa and Kerala.. Must have never heard of that.. 😀
